The International Court of Justice (ICJ), established in 1945, is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. Located in The Hague, Netherlands, the ICJ plays a crucial role in the resolution of disputes between states and the interpretation of international law. Structure of the ICJ

The ICJ consists of 15 judges elected for nine-year terms by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. The judges must represent the world's principal legal systems and reflect the diversity of the international community. The Court operates in two main languages: English and French.

Functions of the ICJ

Contentious Cases: The ICJ adjudicates disputes between states. Only states can bring cases before the Court, and both parties must consent to the Court’s jurisdiction.
